
Why can some children stay focused on a teacher while friends chat nearby, resist blurting out an answer, or settle into homework without a reminder, while others struggle with each of these everyday moments? New research from the Arizona State University Department of Psychology offers a clearer answer than many parents might expect: self-regulation in children is shaped by mothers, fathers, genetics, and life experiences — and each factor contributes in distinct ways, at distinct ages.
Published in the journal Child Development, the study draws on data from 935 twins and shows that children acquire self-regulation gradually, through a combination of inherited tendencies and repeated experiences at home, at school, and among peers. For parents, caregivers, and educators, the findings are both reassuring and actionable. Here is what the research found and what it means for families.

Self-regulation refers to a set of skills that allow children to pay attention, manage impulses, and intentionally start — and stick with — a behavior. It is the mental machinery behind finishing a worksheet while classmates whisper, waiting for a turn to speak, and choosing homework over play even when a favorite game is calling.
The stakes are high. According to Kathryn Lemery-Chalfant, professor of psychology and senior author of the study, self-regulation predicts physical health, mental health, less alcohol and drug use, less criminal offending, and higher family incomes later in life. In other words, the capacity to pause, focus, and persist in childhood echoes across decades.
Children vary widely in these abilities, and that variation is exactly what the ASU research team set out to understand. Their central question: how do genetics and the actions of mothers and fathers work together to create those differences?
One of the most important takeaways from the study is that self-regulation is not a fixed trait that children either possess or lack. As postdoctoral researcher Qingyang Liu, the paper’s first author, explained, children learn self-regulation gradually through repeated experiences. That framing matters for parents: it reframes daily routines, small corrections, and modeled behavior as meaningful practice opportunities rather than background noise.
The research is part of the Arizona Twin Project, co-led by Lemery-Chalfant, professor emeritus Mary Davis, and Leah Doane, professor and chair of the Department of Psychology. The team studied 935 twins at two developmental points — ages 8 and 10 — a design that allowed them to track how influences shift as children grow.
Mothers and fathers completed surveys measuring their own self-regulation abilities, while parents and teachers assessed the children’s self-regulation. Because the sample included both identical and fraternal twins, researchers could separate the contributions of genetics from those of shared and nonshared life experiences — a distinction with real implications for how parents think about their role.
The study found a consistent and early maternal influence. Mothers who reported strong self-regulation abilities themselves had children who were better able to begin and persist at tasks, focus their attention, and inhibit inappropriate responses. These children were also less impulsive overall — and this relationship held at both age 8 and age 10.
In practical terms, mothers appear to influence a broad cluster of self-regulation skills during middle childhood: getting started, staying on track, and holding back impulses. Children spend countless hours observing how the adults around them handle frustration, organize their time, and recover from setbacks, and this research suggests those observations register.
Fathers’ influence followed a different timeline. The study found that fathers who reported a strong ability to focus their own attention had children who were better at paying attention — but this relationship appeared only when the children were 10 years old. The paternal effect was later and more specific than the maternal one.
This pattern suggests that as children move into later middle childhood, fathers may play an increasingly visible role in modeling attention skills, perhaps through shared activities that demand concentration, such as sports, building projects, strategy games, or homework help. It is a useful reminder that parental influence does not fade after early childhood; it evolves.
A central contribution of the study is its treatment of nature and nurture. “Genetic and life experience influences are not competing explanations,” Liu said. “Children actively respond to, select and shape their environments partly on the basis of their individual characteristics, and supportive environments can influence how those characteristics develop and are expressed.”
All aspects of self-regulation measured in the study showed some genetic influence. But that finding comes with an important caveat for parents who might read “genetic” as “fixed.”
“Finding a genetic influence does not mean that a child’s self-regulation ability is fixed or that parenting and other life experiences do not matter,” Liu explained. Heritability describes sources of differences among children within a particular population and context; it does not determine any individual child’s potential.
For families, the message is empowering rather than limiting: a child’s starting point is not a ceiling. Supportive environments shape how inherited tendencies actually play out, which is precisely why parental behavior showed measurable effects in the study.

The finding on nonshared experiences helps explain a puzzle many parents recognize: children raised under the same roof can develop noticeably different capacities for focus and impulse control. A child’s teacher, peer group, and day-to-day experiences outside the family each leave their own imprint.
This also reframes sibling comparisons. Differences between siblings are not necessarily evidence of uneven parenting; they often reflect genuinely different developmental pathways — a point the researchers emphasize when noting that self-regulation is not a single ability with a single route of development.
The research translates into concrete, manageable practices. “Parents can model pausing before reacting, organizing a task, recovering from frustration and returning their attention to a goal,” Liu noted. “Predictable routines, clear expectations, warm guidance and opportunities to make age-appropriate choices can give children regular practice with these skills.”
Children learn regulation by watching adults regulate. Narrating your own process — pausing before responding to frustration, breaking a large chore into steps, or deliberately returning focus after an interruption — turns ordinary moments into demonstrations. The maternal findings in particular suggest that these modeled behaviors are absorbed across the middle-childhood years.
Routines reduce the number of in-the-moment decisions a child must make, freeing attention for the task itself. Consistent morning and homework routines, clear expectations for transitions, and warm but firm guidance give children exactly the kind of repeated practice the research identifies as the engine of self-regulation growth.
Choice-making is itself a regulatory exercise. Letting a child decide whether to do homework before or after a snack, or which of two tasks to tackle first, provides low-stakes practice in planning and follow-through. Structured choices support the ability to intentionally start a behavior — one of the specific skills the study linked to the shared home environment.

Perhaps the study’s most useful insight for parents and educators is its insistence on nuance. “Self-regulation is not a single ability with a single developmental pathway,” Liu said, “and understanding these differences may eventually help us tailor support to a particular skill that a child is working on.”
That means a child who struggles to start tasks needs different support than one who struggles to filter impulses, and a seven-year-old may benefit from different modeling than a ten-year-old. Mothers and fathers each contribute, genetics set a starting range, and classrooms and peer groups add their own influence — so effective support looks at the whole picture rather than searching for one silver-bullet fix.
For educators, the findings argue for classroom strategies that recognize this variety: repeated practice with task initiation, planned attention breaks, and explicit modeling of focus. For parents, they argue for patience with slow, cumulative progress — and for awareness that both parents matter, in different ways and at different stages.
