York College of Pennsylvania Leads Community Support for Homeless Veterans This Giving Season

How York College Mobilizes Students, Faculty, and Staff to Aid Veterans

During the holiday season, the York College of Pennsylvania demonstrates its commitment to humanity by organizing a large-scale donation effort for the local homeless veterans center. The initiative brings together students, faculty, and staff to collect clothing, household essentials, and other necessities that veterans in the community urgently need.

The Annual Clothing Drive: A Tradition of Service

Since its inception, the college’s Annual Clothing Drive has become a cornerstone of campus life. Collection bins were strategically placed in lobbies across campus in November, and the response was overwhelming. Students and faculty filled the bins multiple times, ensuring a substantial donation that would be delivered to the veterans center in time for the holiday season.

Partnering with York Country Day School

For the first time, York Country Day School joined the effort, contributing a large donation and a handmade sign that highlighted the partnership. The collaboration, coordinated by a second‑grade teacher, added a visible show of support and expanded the reach of the donation drive. This partnership underscores the broader community’s role in supporting veterans.

Impact on Veterans and the Community

Two student veterans, Abby Markel and Jeremy McCloud, helped deliver the donations, adding a personal connection to the effort. Their involvement highlighted the importance of honoring veterans and reinforced the message that the college community cares deeply about those who have served. The donation drive is part of the Military and Veterans Advocacy Committee’s (MVAC) ongoing work, which advocates for military‑connected students and supports veterans on campus.

Continuing the Spirit of Giving Beyond the Holidays

While the donation drive is a seasonal event, the values of community support and honoring veterans remain central to the college’s mission throughout the year. The MVAC’s leadership emphasizes that each jacket, household item, or gift card represents a tangible act of dignity and respect for veterans in the USA.
