UNE Medical Students Drive Holiday Giving in Biddeford Primary School

A Tradition of Giving: The Holiday Giving Tree

Every December, the Sigma Sigma Phi (SSP) KAPPA Chapter of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine brings the community together for the annual Holiday Giving Tree. In its seventh year, the drive collected more than 300 toys—double the target—thanks to the generosity of UNE students, faculty, and staff.

Students coordinate the event with Biddeford Primary School administrators, ensuring that gifts reach families facing hardship during the holiday season. The partnership exemplifies UNE’s commitment to service and community well‑being.

How the Drive Supports Biddeford Families

Biddeford educators emphasize the importance of the partnership. The toy drive allows families in need to choose meaningful gifts for their children, fostering a sense of belonging and joy during the holidays.

Principal Meghan Schrader highlighted the growing need in the community and thanked UNE for its ongoing commitment. The collaboration has become a reliable source of support for local families.

Student Leadership and Community Impact

Kin Ly, Pharm.D., Ed.D., advisor of the Sigma Sigma Phi chapter, notes that the toy drive reflects UNE’s broader service ethos. Even as the College of Osteopathic Medicine has moved its primary location to Portland, the students maintain strong ties to Biddeford.

By organizing the toy drive, students demonstrate empathy and responsibility—qualities essential for future osteopathic physicians.

Beyond the Toy Drive: Ongoing Service Initiatives

Throughout the semester, UNE medical students lead several community projects:

  • ReSpectacle eyeglasses collection to support underserved individuals worldwide.
  • Murder Mystery Dinner Theater hosted by the American Geriatrics Society to raise funds for the Southern Maine Hospice Center.
  • Meal preparation by the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Portland.

These initiatives reinforce the students’ commitment to serving others and strengthening community bonds.
