Rutgers University–Camden Nursing Major Receives Silver Valor Award for Heroic Actions

Bea Mikayla Faigal, a nursing student at Rutgers University–Camden and an Air Force ROTC cadet, was recently honored with the Silver Valor Award for her heroic actions during a leadership course at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. This prestigious award recognizes her voluntary act of heroism in aiding high school students suffering from heat exhaustion.

The Incident and Heroic Response

On a scorching summer evening in June, Faigal was assisting as a cadet training officer during a weeklong leadership course for Junior ROTC high school cadets. With temperatures soaring into the 90s and high humidity, many students began showing signs of heat exhaustion while waiting in line for dinner.

Faigal, a certified lifeguard trained in CPR and first aid, noticed the distress among the students. She quickly assessed the situation and took action. Upon returning to the barracks, she found several cadets in need of medical attention. Faigal provided immediate care, ensuring the affected students were hydrated and transported to the infirmary for further treatment.

Recognition and Award

Faigal’s swift and decisive actions did not go unnoticed. She was awarded the Silver Valor Award, the second most prestigious honor in the Air Force ROTC, during a ceremony at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center at Rutgers-New Brunswick. The award citation highlighted her exceptional composure and medical expertise, which directly contributed to the well-being and recovery of over 30 cadets.

Justina Anitului, a fellow cadet and Faigal’s flight commander, praised her leadership and dedication. “The Silver Valor Award is not just about that event, it’s a representation of her overall leadership,” Anitului said. “She always puts others’ needs before her own.”

Background and Inspiration

Faigal’s commitment to nursing and military service is deeply rooted in her family background. Her mother is a nurse, her father is a retired Air Force member, and her older brother attends the United States Naval Academy. This familial influence has shaped her career path and her dedication to serving others.

At Rutgers, Faigal is actively involved in the Rutgers Student Nurses’ Association and the community outreach committee for the School of Nursing’s Student Senate. She also participates in the School of Nursing’s peer mentor program, demonstrating her commitment to both her academic and extracurricular pursuits.

Balancing ROTC and Academic Life

Faigal joined the Air Force ROTC Detachment 485 in her first year at Rutgers. She appreciates the discipline and values instilled by the program, which have helped her grow both personally and professionally. “Each semester, as I continue to learn more about myself through this program, I feel as though it’s truly molding me into the best version of myself,” she said.

Her experience in ROTC has provided her with a sense of community and valuable connections. “I knew I wanted to have a college experience and with Rutgers ROTC, I knew I’d be able to have a little bit of both the military and also college life,” Faigal shared.

Encouraging Others to Consider ROTC

Faigal encourages other students to consider joining ROTC. She believes the program offers a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills, discipline, and a strong sense of community. “I’ve learned to really live by all of those values, both in and out of ROTC,” she said.

Her story serves as an inspiration to aspiring nursing students and those interested in military service. Faigal’s dedication to her studies, her commitment to serving others, and her heroic actions exemplify the values of Rutgers University–Camden and the Air Force ROTC.
