The Doctor of Nursing Practice Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (DNP PMHNP) program at Washington State University is a philosophy doctorate degree that prepares advanced practice nurses to provide direct care to individuals, families, groups and populations with psychiatric and mental health needs. This 3-year program combines didactic coursework in areas such as pharmacology, psychopathology, ethical decision making and family counseling with hands-on clinical experience in a variety of settings. Graduates of the program will be prepared to diagnose and treat mental health issues using evidence-based practices; provide individualized assessments, treatments and interventions; collaborate with other disciplines in healthcare teams; advocate for change through policy development; educate patients, families and communities about mental health concerns; and serve as leaders in the field. With a strong emphasis on evidence-based practice, graduates of this program will have the knowledge and skills needed to make an immediate impact in their communities while providing compassionate care for those with psychiatric/mental health needs.
